Update on Senior License Testing
In last fall’s President’s Message, I touched upon the possibility that senior motorists would be facing mandatory tests in order to renew their licenses. Instead, the Massachusetts Senate voted March 2 to require drivers 75 and older to undergo mental and physical acuity screening at license renewal time and every three years thereafter. The tests would be conducted by a physician once details are developed by the RMV’s Medical Advisory Board.
Earlier, the Massachusetts House approved legislation that would simply require older drivers to renew their licenses in person every five years and pass a vision test as well. Differences in the bills will have to be worked out before the legislation is sent to Governor Patrick for his expected signature.
The proposed requirements are part of broader bills restricting texting and cell phone use while driving in Massachusetts. The Senate would prohibit text messaging from behind the wheel and both versions would forbid teen drivers from using cell phones for calls and text messaging while they drive.
We will continue to keep you up to date on these developments which will affect many of our clients.
